The Psy/Changeling Character Guide

One of the most complex, involved series is Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changelings.  Three distinct races, and many, many characters.  This is my attempt to keep track of who is who, and where they belong.  Two of the strongest Changeling packs in North America are the DarkRiver Leopards, controlling the San Francisco area, and the SnowDancer Wolf Pack, in control of the rest of California.  The icy Psy have seen the fall of Silence and are now struggling to adapt to a world filled with emotion.  And some of the humans, often thought to be the weakest of the three races, have decided to level the playing field.

– The Changelings –

To this point, the Psy/Changeling series has focused on the two dominant Changeling Packs – DarkRiver and SnowDancer.  However, the Changeling world is broad, and Nalini has promised to expand her stories to include other packs in the next story-arc.

– DarkRiver –

DarkRiver is the dominant leopard changeling pack in the United States, in control of San Francisco and the surrounding areas.  They are a powerful pack, but young, with many cubs and juveniles under their protection.  An uneasy co-existence with the SnowDancer wolf changeling pack has matured into a rock-solid alliance under the guidance and protection of Alpha Lucas Hunter and his Sentinels.

– Psy Designations –

To date, several Psy designations and sub-designations have been explored in the Psy/Changeling world. This list of common Psy designations is taken mostly from Nalini Singh’s official website.

Tk  – Telekinesis. Some are teleportation capable, other are not. Power levels vary, but the strongest of the Tk can travel across the world with a thought, move mountains, or cause natural disasters that could alter the face of the world forever.

  • Tk-Cell: A Tk-Cell has the ability to move things at the cellular level. Some are capable of doing this to their own bodies.
  • Tk-V: Also known as “Travelers” these Psy are true teleporters and can go from location to location in the blink of an eye. Travelers are extremely, extremely rare.

Tp – Telepathy. There are many sub-designations of Tp, but the strongest are very rare and usually have positions of power in government or industry.

E – Empath. Not recognized as a designation with the rise of Silence, E-Psy have the ability to sense and heal emotional hurts. They play a pivotal role in stopping the infection spreading through the PsyNet, and help to stabilize the deadly Arrows.

J – Justice. Has the ability to enter a mind and retrieve memories, and then pass those memories on to others. Most often used in the legal world to apprehend and convict criminals.

M – Medical. M-Psy have different specializations. The most well-known of their abilities is the power to see inside a body and diagnose illness. Some M-Psy at the far end of the scale have the capacity to see down to the DNA level. An unknown fraction of M-Psy can actually heal, but that healing appears to be limited to low-level injuries (broken bones, cuts etc).

F – Foresight. These powerful Psy have spent years forecasting for business, but the ability to see into the future can also be used to save lives.

  • B: Backsight. This is a variation of Foresight which is the ability to see events of the past.

Ps – Psychometry. This is the ability to gain information or memories by touching objects.

X –  X-Psy have the ability to produce cold-fire/X-fire, which can burn things to ash within microseconds. The power has the capacity to build until it reaches synergy. This is a very rare designation as most X-Psy do not survive into adulthood.

– The Forgotten –

At the dawn of Silence, the protocol implemented by the Psy to try and leash the deadly insanity rampaging through their race, a few determined souls broke free rather than submit to an emotionless existence and formed the early core of the Forgotten, forming their own ShadowNet. With unique and sometimes deadly powers of their own, the Forgotten fall under the protection of The Shine Foundation.

Other Shine Members: Aubry (vice-director), Beck, Connor (Doctor), Eva, Glen Herriford (Doctor), Maggie, Marty (former Director), Massey Petrokov, Matthew Petrokov (early Psy defector), Rangi (guardian),

– The Human Alliance –

For many years, humans have been the third race, caught between the cold brilliance of the Psy and the physical dominance of the Changelings. But in the changing world climate, a select group of individuals have stepped forward to restore humans to their place of power on the world stage. At one time an organization rife with corruption, the Human Alliance has found its voice under the leadership of Bowen Knight.

Bowen “Bo” Knight – Security chief and leader of The Human Alliance. Adoptive brother of Lily.

  1. Hi Kaleigha!
Such a great and devoted work! I love this character guide, it help me to understand Psy-Changeling series, and refresh my memory too!
Btw, I post the link for this character guide in Nalini Singh’s fanpage at Facebook.
I hope you okay with that🙂

  2. Great work! It’s really helpful since I get confused on certain details sometimes. Now that Kiss of Snow came out, there should be TONS of additional info to add!

  3. nice compilation…

i have a question on aden and vasic though…

if both are arrows and vasic is the tk-v in hostage to pleasure, then the field medic who also had the “assassin” look according to mercy might be aden, correct? (p280 as an m-psy with ability to heal certain injuries…) wouldn’t that make aden’s first appearance as hortage to pleasure instead of blaze of memory?

if one adds in the spoiler in kiss of snow, then while vasic is the teleporter, then aden is an M-psy arrow with telepathy skills? and that aden is with vasic on the resistance(?)

    just curious…

on a joking light hearted note:
ben sure gets along well with marlee (“uncle judd” in carressed by ice, and a quick mention through keenan’s recounting in hostage to pleasure)
and keenan and noor might jump the gun when hormones hit (blaze of memory)

anyway, very nice job on the compilation…

    1. You’re right, it very well might be Aden. It is rare for there to be any random characters in the series. I should email Nalini and ask her…

  4. I don’t believe Adria and Martin are actually mated. I think they are just in a relationship. They have been off and on for years and he won’t accept of dominance which seems necessary for the mating to take place.

    1. Thanks, Kaykay. I don’t mind suggestions at all…as long as I can swing it I will try to accommodate. Thanks agani.

      1. I don’t know how to send you a DM, or I would have. SnowDancer is also the largest changeling pack in the United States (from KoS). Just thought it might be a fun piece of trivia to add. Thanks,
        Kaykay

  5. Kaleigha-
First of all, thank you for doing this amazing labor of love! It’s so cool to be able to separate out the various references and bit players who become major forces as the series goes on. I think Aden’s (and Vasic’s) first appearance was in HtP, though, not BoM – they kept Dorian alive…

    1. Hey mle. You know, I wondered about that myself., but where they weren’t referred to by name I wasn’t sure if I should count it as their first official appearance or not. Might give it a change, though.

  6. Hallio im a new reader but im hooked. Im on clays story now but im dieing to know wat a x-psy is?
it wont stop eating me till i know, this seemed a good place to ask that question.

    1. Hey shene – no problem, as long as you don’t mind spoilers for Kiss of Snow? If you don’t mind knowing ahead, an X-Psy is one that contains and controls a type of super-powered cold fire, able to virtually turn anyone and anything in its’ path to ash in an instant. Very cool, but very hard to control.

      1. ooh nope i don’t mind the spoilers😛 it just gears me up to read it x3 ooh zeen..it sort of reminds me of like jean grey and her denigration thingy, with her fire theme ;p, thanks u lots but one more thing wat does the “X” stand for?

  7. Thanks! I may email Nalini and ask her. I guess she’s never said it in interviews or blogs ect. I’m just too curious, lol.

  8. Of course! I tweeted her lol. If no reply, I’ll try an email. Also if anyone else has any luck as well that’ll be good. Maybe if more people enquire she’ll more likely answer.

      1. Nalini said on twitter she doesn’t have her notes at hand for exact ages but early 30s for Dev and late 20s for Ashaya/Amara. I think she missed Katya though, lol. If Katya was Ashaya’s assistant I guess she’s probably in her mid or early 20s. Anyways, I asked Nalini to clarify for Katya as well.

      2. Thanks for checking back, Angel. I will add the ages when I update with the Tangle of Need info.

      1. I thought Dev was more in the late mid to late 30s personally especially since he is the Director of Shine. But in this world I noticed they tend to be successful and in positions (even in the Psy council) of power quite young.

  9. But I’m glad he is in his early 30s since Katya is early 20s. Late 30s would put like 15+ years difference between him and her, hehe (not that I mind age differences but anyways). So yeah happy with their ages.

  10. I think also he seemed older because of how he kept his emotions in check and had to grow up fast with his hard childhood and being a soildier and needing to make tough decisons as Director.

  11. So basically I’m not that surprised his is younger than expected. Kinda like Sienna, she’s young in age but seems older in spirit because of what she went through.

  12. If its ok, I just finished KoS yesterday, so I was able to find what the ‘X’ stands for in X-Psy. Chapter 28: ” “Some people sas its from the Latin word excardesco, which means ‘to blaze up’ …. I thinks ‘rage’ is also another way it can be defined” ”
    Hope that helps

    1. Hi Marina – I have added all of the Kiss of Snow characters (if I missed any then feel free to let me know), but I didn’t do a pack breakdown for Windhaven at the beginning since there is so little known about them as yet.

      1. Hi Kaleigha. I love the update. For some reason it reminds me a lot of my goodreads review notes.Weird.Will you be adding the Tk-cell designation etc. for some of the Arrows? Also, I could have sworn the Rats had a pack name…no?

      2. Hey marinamoon…Good to know I am not the only one who gets OCD on these things. I hadn’t thought about adding the TK-cell designations to the info at the start, but I think I have them added under each character’s listings in the guide itself. If you caught anything I missed, let me know (the update on this one took a while, but the Immortals After Dark one took FOREVER).

  13. Your not you have a whole goodreads NS book lovers group on this with magnifying glasses.Shudders.Sometimes you guys scare me lol.I am mild OCD compared to you all.Grins. I feel that info may confuse readers and its easier to read the top section instead of looking for each mem by name. What if you don’t remember the characters name.I hope I am making sense. You have my full support.I am still working on editing my own list from your stuff and the goodreads group lists.Like i said i am still editing. Groans.

    1. Thanks…and I feel your pain. It isn’t bad if you have the time to sit down and really focus on it uninterrupted, but if you have a lot of distractions I find that it is easy to get confused. Good luck!

  14. Hi, not to nitpick but Islas, Clays mother, last name was not Bennet. He changed his last name after he got out of juvie, and at that time Isla was already dead. What his last name was before he changed it is not mentioned.

    Other than that great page.🙂

  15. First of all, wow, amazing reference page. I can’t imagine how long it took you to do this.

Small-ish thing regarding the timeline. Kiss of Snow and Tangle of Need both took place in 2081. It’s a (slight) assumption with Kiss of Snow since I didn’t see any dates mentioned in it, but Tangle of Need starts with a reference to the year.

    Still, amazing job!

    1. Thanks, Erin. I did have to do the whole estimate thing sometimes in the timeline, so thanks for letting me know.

    1. I remember when I read that part I had to keep reading it over and over trying to figure out which one had the gauntlet. I will have to check back again and see. Thanks!

  16. Hi Kaleigha, thanks for an amazing amount of information you have gathered, very helpful and informative. I came across your page looking for one with key facts (a bit like the timeline you have at the start) listing (hopefully with detail) key events like in ToN Ch 57 when the Anchors get killed and part of the PsyNet fails. Any idea if something like this exists?
    Thanks again, Sally

    1. Hey Sally – thanks very much. I haven’t come across a breakdown like that in my hunting, but it would be interesting. If you do come across one, would give a shout back?

      1. Oh well, looks like I’ll just have to read them all myself again (sigh! :D) and create it myself😉 If I do I’ll shout out.

  17. When will this site be updated? Now that Heart of Obsidian is out, and since there really isn’t much of a council any longer, it’s probably time to get more recent information out here. I love it and use it to keep track of the characters. Thanks!

    1. Hey there – since I just got the book yesterday (and I do the first read as a pleasure read), I will be updating the guide to include heart of Obsidian hopefully by the end of next week.

    1. Hey Beth – glad you like. I have never seen anything about what makes Aden stand out, just that he is a telepath – and not “just” a medic. Looking forward to finding out, though.

  18. Wow, this characters guide really helping me to understand psy-changeling world. And i wanna suggest you, can you make psy designations, too?

    1. Make a section at the beginning for what known designations there are? I can give it a shot when I add the info for Heart of Obsidian, sure.

      1. You made it, the psy designations. So maybe if someday i forget some designations meaning i can take a peek in here…
        Thanks Kaleigha!
(sorry for my bad english, cuz english is not my native language:))

      2. Hey Lili – no problem.. I probably missed a couple, but I will add them as I go, too.

  19. First off: this is brilliant and so helpful. I can only imagine the hard work you put into it, so thank you!!!

The second thing Clay is 32. It says on pg4 of MtP ‘where he had been incarcerated at the age of fourteen’. Clay confirms that on pg12 ‘ “I spent four years in a cage.” That didn’t count the fourteen he’d passed in the small boxlike apartments he and his mother had called home.’

Clay was 18 when he left juvie + 14 years with his mother = 32. I’m reading MtP for the second time and I’m just at the beginning so I I’m wrong I’m sorry! But again thank you for this page. The information has helped refresh my memory!!

    1. Those things are hard to keep track of sometimes – even when I write everything down I still have to wonder if I got it right.

  20. Any ideas who the forgotten tracker mentioned in Heart of Obsidian is? I feel like I should know, but I’ve read through the books and no one jumps out…

  21. does anyone know exactly how large the Snow Dancer and/or Dark River territories are? could anyone make a map? like color coded and such?

    1. Hmm, I remember reading before about the amount of territory that they both cover, but I can’t remember details, for some reason. SnowDancer is much, much larger than DarkRiver, I do remember that. I will check around and see if anyone has done up something like a map.

  22. I would be interested in an entry about the Shine Foundation and the Forgotten, if possible. Thanks. Also, also there was mention of the deer clan slaughtered in Caressed by Ice, DawnSky.

  23. Can I ask something? How did you figure out the timeline?

The timeline doesn’t seem to match, Sahara was kidnapped in 2073 according to your timeline, in the story she was rescued 7 years later, that would make it 2080…but the books in which she was rescued are 2082 according to this timeline! (I don’t have the books with me, so I can’t tell what the years were)

Thank you very much for this though! I really appreciate it! :3

    1. Hey there…Glad you like it. It has been a while since I did it, but from what I remember I took the info directly from the book and then did the general math…like 2073 for her kidnapping could’ve been late 2073/early 2074, that sort of thing. I guess it depends on where it falls in the season.

  24. Love this site. While Vasic ended with a brand new psy character named Ivy Jane, the next book, due out this June 2015 features two characters from your original
list – Aden and Zaira. So glad to have her basics listed here. We still do not know Aden’s secret psy skill/power. The hints continue.

  25. Good reference. Only according to the prologue Slave to Senation takes place in 2079 (so therefor does Visions of Heat).

    1. No problem…I am just proofing it now, to get rid of some of the extraneous crap I tend to throw in, and it should be good to go.

      1. I found it was getting a bit unwieldy, so I dumped it. Since pretty much every book states the date at the beginning, I figured it might not be missed too much.

  26. Thanks for the updates.

Do you think the Sione mentioned by Faith in Visions of Heat is the same Sione mentioned in Kiss of Snow as being an Arrow? If Arrows are all removed from their families for training during childhood, she would no longer be considered a part of PacificRose. I just got the feeling rereading the entire series again they may be different characters.

Looking forward to Shards of Hope on Tuesday.

    1. I wondered about that, too. I almost listed them as two separate characters, but I figured since the F-designation is rare, and the name is unique, it was probably the same person.

      1. Having reread the books again the only mention of Psyclan PacificRose’s Sione is in Visions of Heat when Faith mentions she’s the only other F-psy who occasionally challenges her as the best F-sy in the world.

I don’t see where the Arrow’s Sione is mentioned as being an F-psy. She and Abbot were considering joining PurePsy in Kiss of Snow and then it is stated they are considered the squad’s best trackers in Heart of Obsidian. All of the Arrows are combat designations, so I just don’t see an F psy fitting in with the squad.

I really think they are different characters, though I may be wrong.

      2. That is where I always have trouble. I had them listed as two separate characters before, but someone emailed me and said it was wrong. Since I didn’t remember, I changed it. On one hand, it is hard to picture an F-Psy as an Arrow because most arrows have combat abilities, but then again how common is the name Sione? Tricky.

      3. I get your point. But she tends to repeat names she likes, so… The fact that she’s still identified as part of the Psyclan when all other Arrows are scrubbed from their family records is my main sticking point. And really what use is foreshadowing to the squad? I don’t see an F psy surviving the old school Arrow training.

I guess we shall have to wait and see. She hasn’t been mentioned lately so we may never know – lol.

      4. Actually, you make a good point about no arrow ever being associated with a family group. And maybe Sione is a popular name in some countries?

      5. Just out of curiousity I looked and it was a popular boy’s name in the 1990s. But I’m not sure which countries the website pulled data for their rankings from. It’s only in the past decade or so it’s been used as a girl’s name from what I saw.

    1. I plan to add the info in the next couple of weeks, just to give any lingerers a chance to check it without being too spoiled.

    1. I can try, but sometimes the ages aren’t mentioned again and to figure out how many timeline years have passed since their age was mentioned is a bit tricky.

      1. Thank you so much I have been trying to figure out the ages and it is so hard because not every book has a time line.

      2. Well, usually the ages of the main characters are taken from their own story, when they have had one, and pretty much all of the books have taken place over the course of something like a three or four year period. The timeline thing is a tricky one, since everyone seems to have their own take on when things happened.

  27. Just wanted to let you know i love this site and i’m so happy you keep updating the characters for this series and the Guild Hunter series. You are my go to site whenever i need a refresher before starting another Nalini Singh book.

  28. I have only recently discovered the psy/changeling series, initially finding them in my library and because I love it so much I have started to buy the books to keep. I would like to say thank you so very much for putting together this character guide and I certainly appreciate all the work you have put into it.
I can tell you beyond a doubt that I am now a Nalini Singh fan for life.

    1. Hey Summer – many thanks! I actually envy you the just starting out with the series (and the Guild Hunter books are great, too). I came into the Psy/Changelings when there were maybe five books out, and I loved pulling a catch-up marathon. Now the waiting for the next installment sucks.

  29. Hi kaleigha, what can I say but WOW! You have done an awesome work here. I have read all of the books, but I had forgotten some of the characters. I really love this guide and deeply appreciate all of your hard work and time spent. You are amazing

  30. I know the info hasn’t appeared in the published books (yet), but will you be adding that Zane is Aneca’s father and his mate’s name is Rissa (info from short story A Conversation)?

Just started my annual series reread. Looking forward to this year’s Allegiance of Honor as well as the Wild Embrace anthology.

    1. Hm, I never thought of adding info from the free short stories Nalini sends out. I could go through them, since I think they are all on Nalini’s site, and I don’t think it would take long to go through them. It’s funny, I for some reason just had to pick up Slave to Sensation again last night – couldn’t sleep until I had skimmed through it again.

    1. Hey Nikki…I have started to update to include Allegiance of Honor, and hopefully I will have it completed in the next couple of days.

  31. Hi, first off thank you so much for creating such an informative page over all the characters! Totally filling in some gaps for me.🙂 But I did have a question, does any one recall which books it was again that Tatiana was first mentioned mind controlling Bo in? I think it was a snippet or two mentioned in two different books. But as I don’t own them I can’t recall which. Thanks again.

    1. The only thing I can remember about that is in Branded by Fire, where Tatiana was drained after mind-controlling someone, and speculated that it would be easy to do to the next Alliance leader, too. The details are hazy, though.

  32. I have another question about Tatiana. Is she still imprisoned by Kaleb? When I read AoH, my first thought about “The Architect” was Tatiana, but I couldn’t remember if she was still alive or not.

    1. The last I can remember, she is still being held by Kaleb in Santano’s old torture chamber. I wonder if he will hold her for the same number of years that she held Sahara?

  33. I love this site!!! I look at it every time Nalini Singh writes a new book so i can get a refresher on all the characters. I really appreciate you taking the time to keep your pages updated. Its a life saver🙂

    1. Thanks! I am in the midst of doing a giant edit on it, hopefully to make it a bit more manageable and maybe get rid of some of the excess and contradictions. Until the next book.

  34. Even though she’s only been mentioned and hasn’t appeared on page yet in the series, we know Dalton’s mate’s name is Emeline from the family tree at the front of Texture of Intimacy. Aisha is their daughter.

Also according to Nalini, Cooper’s last name is Shaw, Grace’s last name is Burke. Mack and Lara’s last name is Knight (though they are not related to Bo and Lily, just share a common surname).

Keelie’s last name is Schaeffer (she’s the same character quoted at the beginning of chapter 10 of Sheild of Winter).

Looking forward to the anthology later this month.

    1. Eek Shield of Winter. Oops.

Thanks for the updates. I had the birth order of the triplets wrong on my list since they were introduced with Acton in the middle and then the nicknames given the same way. Good catch!

    2. Thanks! It drives me nuts to not have the full name of a character, especially a main character. I actually emailed Nalini once to ask her what Deacon’s (Guild Hunter) name was, it bugged me that bad. She said she hadn’t revealed it. Yet.

      1. I emailed her about Emmett’s last name, but haven’t heard back. I wish we had a family tree in front of every book.

      2. Hah…I am not the only one who has gotten desperate enough to email the author. Good to know.

  35. I just finished book 11 “Tangle of Need” and I did not have a clue as to who the ghost was. I just guessed a name and after reading this guide I see that I was right, but it was only a guess. I didn’t pick up any clues on him so I need to pay more attention. This guide is nice. I like to be able to easily see a characters back ground, history and how they relate to other characters. I think all series authors should have something like this!
